“BEYOND THE COASTAL POSTCARD”
STEVE PERRIN TO SHARE KNOWLEDGE OF LOCAL BAYS

Perrin2

In a program meant to stimulate an informed public discussion of Maine's coastal heritage and its relation to future demands and changes, Dr. Steve Perrin will summarize the findings from five years of ecosystem monitoring in Taunton Bay on December 20 at the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory. Perrin, a local naturalist living in Bar Harbor and former president of the Friends of Taunton Bay (a smaller bay within Frenchman’s Bay), will share what he has learned about pollution, sea-level rise, eelgrass spread and density, mudflat life, and native species, among other topics in a talk entitled “Beyond the Coastal Postcard.”

On the basis of his local findings, Perrin will take a broader look at selected fisheries and watershed development along Maine's 5,000-mile coastline. As he says, "I am driven by a sense of concern for the welfare of these coastal waters and the communities they support. I monitor the state of the bay to be forewarned of what might be coming to Maine's coast and communities."

Perrin is also an educator and writer.  His books include Acadia: The Soul of a National Park  and Acadia’s Trails and Terrain.

This is the final program of the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory's 2007 Bay Ecology Lecture Series. Talks in the series are intended for a general audience and offer a scientific perspective on issues affecting local waters.  The series is an outgrowth of concern among MDIBL scientists about the condition of Frenchman’s and Eastern Bays. The lecture will be held at 4 p.m. in Maren Auditorium at MDIBL and is free of charge. For more information, please call 288-3147 or visit www.mdibl.org.
