Our Work Depends on You

As a non-profit research institution, our work depends on you and all the generous people who support us. At MDIBL, we believe there is no greater investment than one in the future health of our children and our environment.

How Your Gift Helps

The generous support received by friends of MDIBL each year is critical to our ability to continue our innovative research and educational programs. Without the flexibility these funds provide, we simply could not continue to do what we do.

Research
The quality of our research programs is demonstrated by the support we receive from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). However, federal research grants only cover about 75% of the total cost of our research. The balance of these costs are funded by charitable support and endowment earnings.

Charitable gifts are especially important in helping young scientists gather the data required to successfully compete for federal research grants. This seed money is crucial to the growth of our scientific research programs.

Education
Last year MDIBL provided research fellowships to more than 50 high school, undergraduate, and graduate students An estimated 89% of students who participate in our educational programs go on to pursue careers in science or medicine.

Your gift ensures that MDIBL will continue to provide hands-on training to hundreds of students each year.

Environment
MDIBL scientists are working to better understand the relationship between our environment and our health, as well as to conserve and restore vital marine habitats.

Whether it is enabling a scientist to study the effects of chronic exposure to environmental chemicals or providing a group of elementary school students with the opportunity to restore vital marine habitats, gifts to the Annual Fund play a vital role in supporting our mission.
