Governance

The Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory was incorporated in Maine in 1914. The Laboratory is governed by a Corporation with two types of members: Regular and Associate. Regular members are those with advanced scientific degrees, and Associate Members are non-scientists who are interested in the aims and purposes of MDIBL. The Corporation meets annually in Salisbury Cove, Maine, on the fourth Thursday in July.

The Corporation elects a Board of Trustees composed of not less than 12 nor more than 28 members, to represent its interests. The Board of Trustees comprises a diverse group of leaders who bring a range of expertise and talent to governing MDIBL and are entrusted with legal and fiduciary responsibility for the Laboratory’s operation.

The majority of the Board’s work is done through committees which make recommendations to the full board. The Board meets three times per year.
