The Mount
Desert Island Biological Laboratory has since its founding
been a Center of summer research by a world-wide cadre of
visiting scientists and students. The tradition of summer
research continues today with scientists representing
over dozens of institutions in the United States, Europe, and South
America conducting studies in comparative physiology,
toxicology, and marine functional genomic studies. In addition
to the Principal Investigators, MDIBL is a summer home to
students, technicians, and research associates. Student
programs focus on long term summer residential research experiences
which place students in the laboratory of one of our senior
mentor/investigators.
Research space is also available year-round for investigators on sabbatical. More information is available below.
New Investigator Awards
New Investigator Awards are available for scientists at all stages of their career who wish to utilize research resources at MDIBL between May 1 and October 31. Awards can be used to defray the cost of lab space, housing, equipment fees and other costs depending on individual needs. Average awards are between $4,000 and $12,000. Larger awards from the Salisbury Cove Research Fund (Thomas H. Maren Foundation) may be available depending on need and potential long term commitment to the Laboratory.
Faculty Sabbaticals
More information coming soon.
NIEHS Center for Comparative Toxicology
Pilot Projects
The Pilot Project Program provides support
for investigators who are interested in pursuing a new project
related to environmental toxicology in one or more of the
Center’s Research Cores. The purpose of these Pilot
grants is to obtain preliminary data to facilitate new grant
submissions. Grants are awarded competitively and successful
applicants receive up to $10,000/season. Preference is given
to investigators who are new to the Center and to junior faculty
who are not yet independently funded. Pilot recipients are
encouraged to interact and where appropriate collaborate with
existing Center members. Application procedures for CCT Pilot
Projects are the same as procedures for the New Investigator
Awards (see above). Please in the research summary that you
are applying for a CCT Pilot Project. CCT
Pilot Project applicants should use NIA application forms
and documentation.
Undergradute
Student Fellowships
Undergraduate student fellowships are
available for undergradutes enrolled at any US college or
university. Two programs are available. The Research Experience
for Undergraduates (REU) is a well-known National Science
Foundation research program in place at MDIBL since 1994.
Any undergraduate may apply. The Maine Biomedical Research
Infrastructure Network (Maine BRIN) sponsors undergradute
research programs for students attending one of the following
Maine colleges: Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, College of the Atlantic,
University of Maine. Undergraduate support is also available
from the American Heart Association and the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation. Approximately 25 undergraduate student fellowships
are awarded each year.
Gradute
Student Fellowships
A limited number of graduate student fellowships are available
for students pursuing graduate or doctoral studies. In addition
to other requirements, graduate studets must be recommended
by an MDIBL investigator.
High
School Fellowships
High school students have a special place
at MDIBL. Like undergradutes, high school students are awarded
long-term research fellowships to work in the laboratory of
an MDIBL investigator. Unlike undergraduates, high school
students have two mentors; one, their primary mentor in the
laboratory; two, an MDIBL investigator who is always available
outside of the lab to answer questions and provide
assistance. Most full fellowships awarded to Maine high school
students. Support for students outside the State of Maine
may be avaiable on a limited basis.
