Our MDIBL research focuses on understanding the behavior of trace organic contaminants of emerging concern (endocrine disrupting compounds, pharmaceuticals and personal care products or “EDC/PPCPs”) in natural waters. These compounds are introduced into the environment through a variety of pathways, and some have biological effects even at very low concentrations. Our work involves measuring these compounds in water, sediment, and biomass using a technique called tandem mass spectrometry. This technique is now being applied to understand how these pollutants are transported in terrestrial watersheds.
