Transport proteins within specialized barrier and excretory tissues are major determinants of the uptake, distribution, and excretion of potentially toxic foreign chemicals and thus provide major protective functions. We use marine models to characterize the molecular mechanisms involved and their regulation. Current projects are focused on ATP-driven, efflux pumps within renal proximal tubule and the blood-brain barrier.
