Martha and Wistar Morris Center for Environmental Health Sciences

The overarching goal of the Morris Center is to bring biomedical and marine scientists together to understand how the health of the environment affects human health and well-being. The Program in Marine Conservation and Environmental Science focuses on understanding the physical environment and the interactions that define local marine ecosystems. MDIBL scientists also work with members of the community to conserve and restore fragile ocean ecosystems that have been damaged by human activity, such as eelgrass beds in Frenchman’s Bay. The Program in Environmental Stress Biology focuses on understanding the physiological, molecular, and genetic mechanisms organisms use to respond to natural and human-induced environmental changes, and how failure of these response mechanisms contributes to disease, aging, and loss of marine biodiversity.

The Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD) is a public database that helps researchers discover relationships between chemicals in the environment, genes, and disease.

The Community Environmental Health Laboratory (CEHL) is MDIBL’s primary outreach program, involving citizens of all ages and backgrounds in water quality monitoring and remediation, including habitat restoration.
