Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU):
in Marine Comparative Functional Genomics

Genomics, Bioinformatics, Toxicology, Physiology

The Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory is a Research Experience for Undergraduates Site supported by the National Science Foundation. MDIBL has established programs for undergraduate education to enhance scientific training in the biological and biomedical sciences. Fellowships are available for research support for the summer season.

MDIBL provides the highest quality undergraduate training for undergraduate students planning careers in research or medicine. MDIBL is a highly collaborative, collegial, and camp-like environment, where students and scientists design and conduct experiments together and discuss results over homemade chowder in the dining hall.

Outstanding Mentors

Research groups represent 65 universities, graduate schools and research institutions in the United States, Europe and South America. MDIBL mentors are senior research scientists chosen for excellence in undergraduate teaching and top quality research. Undergraduate fellows are sometimes listed as co-authors on peer-reviewed publications. View the list of MDIBL research mentors.

Downeast Coastal Maine

The Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory is located in the village of Salisbury Cove, Maine, on the shore of Frenchman’s Bay at the north side of Mount Desert Island. The Laboratory is a short distance from the trails of Acadia National Park and the picturesque villages of Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor, and Somesville.

Funding for Housing, Travel & Salary

Fellowships are all inclusive. Housing, dining, and travel (airfare) are paid for by the fellowship. Students at MDIBL are paid $420 per week to cover personal expenses. Underrepresented minorities in science are strongly encouraged to apply.
