Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory in 2007 received a grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to enhance environmental education at the Myers Marine Aquarium.
Under this grant program, MDIBL is seeking an experienced teacher and environmental educator for an 8-week fellowship during the summer of 2008. Over the course of 8 weeks, a project teacher/environmental educator will work in the Myers Aquarium, an outdoor marine aquarium and center of the Laboratory’s summer outreach program. The project teacher will complete several key research and education activities. These activities include:
- Learn marine animal care and handling and set up basic aquarium displays at the beginning of the summer season
- Participate in training with MDIBL education staff on how to conduct the MDIBL visitor’s program
- Help conduct the weekly visitor’s program at the Myers Marine Aquarium
- Design assessment tools and evaluate environmental education at Myers Marine Aquarium, including both educational methods and display design
- Design and conduct new environmental education activities for a K-12 audience, using resources in the Myers Marine Aquarium
- Supervise, with the help of MDIBL staff, an undergraduate research intern who will assist with aquarium activities in conjunction with their own environmental education research program
- Report evaluation results to MDIBL education and outreach staff
Myers Marine Aquarium is a recently constructed outdoor pavilion with several tanks displaying unique marine species from Frenchman’s Bay near Mount Desert Island and the Gulf of Maine. Tanks include a large touch tank, and several display tanks for a variety of organisms including marine animal and plant life. Approximately 4,000 people per summer visit the Myers Aquarium.
The fellowship includes on campus room and board for 8 weeks, and a $6000 stipend. Approximate dates are June 23 to August 15, 2008.
