Summary

This year, the Gordon Research Conference on Mycotoxins and Phycotoxins will be held from June 15 to June 20, at Colby College, Maine. On the weekend prior to this important conference we are again organizing a satellite workshop titled "Field Portable and Confirmatory Assay Technologies for Mycotoxins and Phycotoxins" to be held at the Mt. Desert Biological Laboratory in Salsbury Cove, Maine.

Naturally occurring fungal and algal toxins comprise the major source of non-bacterial food poisoning in humans, agricultural animals, and wildlife. The goal of this workshop is to advance the development of detection methods for fungal and algal toxins by bringing together scientists from both disciplines to examine the application of new technologies and recent developments in detection methods for these toxins. The format for this workshop will be lectures in the mornings followed by "hands-on" demonstrations of rapid test methods in the afternoons. Manufacturers will be demonstrating test kits and participants are encouraged to bring their own samples for analysis. This format provides users and potential users important information on the capabilities and correct use of rapid, field portable tests.
