Research in the John W. and Jean C. Boylan Center for Cellular and Molecular Physiology focuses on understanding cell membranes, epithelial physiology and the way cells and proteins communicate and interact with each other. Scientists in the Program in Membrane Biology are defining the mechanisms that control the movement of salts, water, nutrients, and metabolites in and out of cells and how epithelial organs such as the kidney function. Neuroscientists in the Program in Neuroscience use comparative models, especially crustaceans and echinoderms, to discover how nervous systems develop, regenerate, and function to control complex behaviors.
